BOTOX

What is Botox?
Botulinum toxin, one of whose trademarks is Botox, is a protein synthesized in a laboratory in liquid form that has several uses.
Your facial expressions, exposure to the sun and the passage of time produce wrinkles. In aesthetic medicine, botulinum toxin is mainly used to reduce the appearance of facial wrinkles and to prevent the formation of new wrinkles. These wrinkles are particularly visible on the forehead, between the eyebrows (glabella) and next to the eyes (crow's feet).
You can achieve a rejuvenated appearance with botulinum toxin injections (such as Botox, Xeomin and Dysport). These three molecules generally have a similar effect on most people but they have certain more distinct characteristics. In addition, there are several other uses for botulinum toxin, such as adjusting the height and shape of eyebrows or slimming the lower face without surgery by relaxing the jaw muscles.
In another vein, in general medicine, botulinum toxin can be used to treat muscle spasms of the eyelids and face, certain types of migraines, and excessive sweating of the armpits and hands.
Normally, the effect of botulinum toxin is seen after 1 to 7 days and helps relax the facial muscles to reduce wrinkles. The injection is done with a very fine needle. The procedure is not painful, often described as being barely more than a mosquito bite.
The effect of botulinum toxin lasts on average 3 months, after which a maintenance treatment can be done to restore the full effect. The treatment is very safe and the possible side effects (eg drooping eyelid) are very rare and virtually all disappear fairly quickly if they ever occur. And, good news, the more you treat an area of the face, the more the facial wrinkles disappear and the longer the results last. The goal is to give you a rejuvenated look by relaxing the facial muscles, while preserving enough facial movement to avoid the appearance of a ''frozen face''.

BOTOX treatment:

- The short history of botox:
Botox is first and foremost a medication. Moreover, the name botox, which has become common, is originally that of a brand. Its active ingredient is botulinum toxin, which is also used in conventional medicine to treat the symptoms of many pathologies. Among them, spasms, repeated stiff necks, as well as chronic neurological pain such as migraines. Because, like many medicines, it originates from a natural poison.
This botulinum toxin has the effect of paralyzing the nerves. Its use in small doses to treat various ailments was developed by an ophthalmologist in the 1980s. His process was then bought by the American laboratory Allergan. Its effectiveness on wrinkles, understood after the fact, made the product famous, but did not enrich its original discoverer.
- Botox injection, success of aesthetic medicine:
The first authorization for the use of botox in aesthetic medicine dates back to 1997. In France, it was not until 2003. At that time, the Food and Drug Administration in the United States authorized its marketing to treat glabellar wrinkles. In other words, to reduce the lion's wrinkle: the one that forms vertical lines between the eyes.
By paralyzing the nerves that control the muscles of this wrinkle, botox truly softens the forehead. Little by little, botox has become more widespread and has since been used to smooth, in addition to the lion's wrinkle, crow's feet and horizontal wrinkles on the forehead.
Today, botox is also used to correct all other signs of aging and sagging of the face. This is particularly the case for the lips or, more precisely, the area around the lips, where "sadness lines" and other "bitterness folds" are sometimes located.
- Results on smoothing wrinkles:
Smoothing wrinkles after a botox injection can take from 2 to 10 days depending on the person. This is the time it takes for the product to work and for the muscle to respond to the botulinum toxin by relaxing. It all depends on how you normally contract these muscles.
Similarly, depending on the person, the effect lasts between 3 and 8 months. Botox therefore requires regular injections to remain effective.

Botox: before/after

- Side effects of botox:
There are some common side effects after a botox injection but they do not last, in the majority of cases. You may have redness limited to the injection points. Or, more rarely, bruises that disappear after a maximum of one week.
In the event of more serious or more bothersome side effects, it is essential to see your practitioner.
- Precautions to take:
Even if it is not cosmetic surgery, but injections, the fact remains that botox is a very active product.
Remember that only specialist doctors in the following fields are authorized to perform these injections (for medical or aesthetic purposes depending on the specialty):
  • Plastic reconstructive and aesthetic surgery
  • Dermatology
  • Face and neck surgery
  • Maxillofacial surgery
  • Ophthalmology
